Appraisals

Jewelry can hold a myriad of meaning for various people.

For those pieces that are most valued and cherished, regardless of reason or circumstance, having a written statement from a qualified specialist is an invariably intelligent move that you wouldn’t want to overlook. It is also an invaluable complement to any piece of jewelry whether you’ve just purchased a new piece or one that you already own or one that you have inherited.

What is a Written Jewelry Appraisal?

A written jewelry appraisal is document that clearly states the details and value of any piece(s) of jewelry. At Aurum Jewelers, our appraisals include pictures of the item and a detailed description of each piece, followed by the market value. The description includes the specifics of: fineness (karat purity) of the gold and other precious metals, details (carat, cut, shape, clarity, etc.) of precious and semi-precious gemstones that are present, stylistic nuances, as well as a thorough description of the piece using proper industry terms. After the description, it will then state the current market value of your jewelry.

Reasons to consider getting a Written Jewelry Appraisal

-Insurance
Most insurance companies require a formal written appraisal from a specialist.
If your jewelry is lost or stolen, having a document including photographs and written details of what has gone missing provides you with direction for potentially recovering or recreating your piece. It is also useful if your piece has been damaged in some way and requires repair.
-Proof of Ownership
-Education // Information
Jewelry appraisals offer you the finer details of your jewelry that you might not have been fully aware of. This can include gemstone weight, cut, clarity, metal quality, stylistic/designer considerations, and even history (if it is an antique, vintage, or heirloom piece.
-Estate Planning
Jewelry appraisals are useful for determining fair market value in estates. It is very common to work with attorneys and clients on behalf of estates.
-Peace of Mind

How often should jewelry be appraised?

Even if you have had your jewelry appraised in the past, it is prudent to update it every few years. This is beneficial due to the fact that jewelry typically appreciates over time. This is particularly true currently with the continuously fluctuating value of precious metals and stones.
